Community Speed Watch information

Whilst out and about yesterday with Midland Heart Housing officers at Dracan Village, one of the main issues was speeding drivers therefore below gives you the correct information regarding Community Speed Watch. 

Volunteers Helping to Keep Derbyshire’s Roads Safe

A key focus of our approach to keep our roads safe is through education—helping drivers understand the risks and encouraging safer behaviour on our roads.

One of the most valuable parts of this work is delivered by our dedicated Community Speedwatch volunteers. This scheme empowers local residents to raise concerns about speeding in their neighbourhoods and play an active role in improving road safety.

When a concern is reported, we assess the location to ensure it is suitable and safe for monitoring. Trained volunteers then carry out sessions at approved sites, recording details of vehicles that exceed the speed limit. This includes:

Speed

Registration number

Vehicle make and colour

Drivers identified as speeding receive a letter informing them of their excess speed. These letters are designed to educate and raise awareness, rather than punish, helping to reinforce the importance of sticking to speed limits.

We also analyse the data collected to identify repeat offenders and more serious cases of speeding. This information helps shape where and how we deploy our enforcement teams, ensuring resources are targeted where they are most needed.

Our Community Speed Watch volunteers are really commitment to making local roads safer in their communities through Derbyshire. Over the past year, they have carried out numerous sessions, with many motorists receiving advisory letters highlighting the dangers of speeding. These letters also include a powerful link to a mother’s story, sharing the devastating impact of losing her son in a collision where speed was a factor—a poignant reminder of why this work matters.

Also an update regarding the RTC yesterday afternoon on Walton Road near to Dracan village.

The driver of a white van collided into the fencing opposite the junction which is notorious for accidents. This accident was triggered by a medical episode therefore no person's were injured, but thank you for your help and patience.
